Why I Created the Coastal Collections™
One of the questions I hear almost every single day is...
"Melonie...what should everyone wear?"
For years, I answered that question one family at a time.
I'd send Pinterest boards.
Recommend color palettes over the phone.
Text outfit ideas.
Help moms coordinate dresses with shirts for dads and outfits for the kids.
Eventually I realized something...
Families everywhere were asking the exact same question.

Start With Mom
If you're wondering where to begin, my advice is always the same...
Start with Mom.
Choose the outfit that makes you feel the most confident.
Not because everything revolves around Mom—but because she's usually the one coordinating everyone else's wardrobe.
Once Mom chooses her dress, the rest of the family's outfits become much easier to build.
For this collection, Mom selected a beautiful floral maxi dress filled with shades of yellow, turquoise, white, and soft green.
From there, everyone else simply pulled colors from her dress.
Dad wore a classic white linen shirt.
The girls picked up the yellow tones.
The boys stayed in crisp whites and soft blues.
Grandparents wore light neutrals that complemented the overall palette without competing for attention.
Everything felt connected without anyone looking identical.
That's the secret.
Don't ask everyone to wear the same thing.
Instead, let everyone wear their own version of the same story.

Dads...This Is Your Entire Assignment 😄
Let's be honest...
Most dads aren't spending hours researching beach fashion.
They simply want someone to tell them what works.
So here it is.
Choose a lightweight linen shirt or a soft cotton button-down.
Pair it with khaki shorts or lightweight neutral pants.
Leave the athletic shirts at home.
Skip the cargo pockets.
Empty your pockets before the session.
Please don't hang your sunglasses from your collar.
And most importantly...
Smile.
That's it.
I promise you'll survive the session.
In fact, one of my favorite things to hear at the end of a session is...
"That actually wasn't bad."
I'll happily take that as one of the highest compliments I can receive.
Dressing the Kids
Children are naturally the heart of every family session.
They don't need perfect outfits.
They need comfortable outfits.
Choose clothing they can run in.
Laugh in.
Hug Grandma in.
Build sandcastles in.
Little girls look beautiful in flowing dresses that move with the breeze.
Little boys photograph wonderfully in lightweight shorts, rolled sleeves, linen shirts, and soft cotton fabrics.
Bare feet always feel right on the beach.
Most importantly, don't ask your children to wear something they hate.
If they're constantly tugging on a shirt or complaining about uncomfortable shoes, it will show in their expressions.
Happy kids create genuine smiles.
Genuine smiles create unforgettable photographs.
Grandparents Matter Too
One of the reasons I love extended family sessions so much is that they're really about more than the grandchildren.
They're about celebrating generations.
These portraits become family heirlooms.
Years from now, your grandchildren won't remember exactly what everyone was wearing.
They'll remember the hugs.
The laughter.
The stories.
The time spent together.
For grandparents, I recommend timeless clothing in soft neutral tones such as cream, white, light blue, soft gray, or sand.
Comfort is just as important as style.
Choose breathable fabrics that allow you to move easily, walk comfortably, and enjoy every moment with your family.
Your smile will always be the most beautiful thing you wear.
What to Avoid Wearing
Choosing what not to wear can be just as important as choosing the perfect outfit. The goal is for your family's faces, personalities, and connections to be the focus of your portraits—not distracting clothing.
Here are a few things I recommend leaving at your vacation rental before heading to your session.
Large Logos & Graphics
Bold brand logos, graphic T-shirts, and large lettering tend to draw attention away from your family and can make photographs feel dated over time. Classic, solid-colored clothing always creates a more timeless look.
Neon Colors
Bright neon colors often reflect unwanted color onto your skin and compete with the beautiful natural tones of the beach. Softer colors photograph much more naturally during sunset.
Athletic Wear
Unless your session has a specific sports theme, skip athletic shirts, gym shorts, and performance fabrics. Linen, cotton, and other natural materials create a softer, more relaxed coastal look.
Busy Patterns
One floral dress or subtle print can add beautiful texture, but too many competing patterns become distracting. I recommend one or two patterns mixed with coordinating solid colors.
Cargo Shorts & Full Pockets
Cargo pockets add unnecessary bulk. Before your session, empty your pockets of phones, wallets, keys, and sunglasses to create clean, flattering lines.
Matching Everyone Exactly
The biggest mistake I see is families trying to dress everyone identically.
Today's portraits look far more timeless when everyone coordinates within the same color palette while expressing their own personality.
My biggest advice is simple...
Wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

Our Quick Flow Posing System
One of the questions I'm asked most often before an extended family session is...
"How do you photograph twenty people in only thirty minutes?"
The answer isn't rushing.
It's preparation.
After photographing families for more than 25 years, I've developed a posing system that keeps everyone moving naturally while making sure we capture every important combination.
We don't wander around trying to decide what comes next.
We don't waste time gathering everyone together over and over again.
And we definitely don't spend thirty minutes trying to get one perfect photo.
Instead, every session follows a carefully planned flow.
We begin with the entire family while everyone is fresh and smiling.
Then we quickly photograph each individual family.
Grandparents with grandchildren.
Grandparents with all of the grandchildren.
Just the siblings.
Each couple together.
Parents with their children.
Cousins together.
Individual children.
Finally, we finish with fun candids, walking photos, hugs, laughter, and those beautiful in-between moments that often become everyone's favorites.
Because everything is planned in advance, the session feels relaxed instead of rushed.
You simply enjoy spending time with your family while I guide you through the rest.
The Magic Happens Between the Poses
Some of my favorite photographs aren't the ones where everyone is looking at the camera.
They're the moments right after.
Grandpa making a silly face at the grandchildren.
Mom laughing because Dad whispered something funny.
Brothers teasing each other.
Sisters fixing one another's hair.
A little hand reaching for Grandma's.
Those unscripted moments tell your family's story far better than any perfectly posed portrait ever could.
That's why I always leave room for genuine interaction throughout every session.
I'll give you just enough direction to make everyone look their best, but I'll never ask your family to become someone they're not.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is connection.
Why Our Sessions Last Only 30 Minutes
One of the questions that surprises families the most is how quickly our extended family sessions move.
Most people expect to spend an hour or more standing on the beach.
Instead, our sessions are designed to be efficient, relaxed, and enjoyable.
There's a reason for that.
Children have short attention spans.
Grandparents get tired standing in the sand.
The Florida heat can be intense.
Hair starts blowing everywhere.
Dinner reservations are waiting.
Vacation should still feel like vacation.
By keeping the session to about thirty minutes, everyone stays happier.
The smiles stay genuine.
The kids are still having fun.
Grandparents remain comfortable.
And yes...
Even Dad is still smiling.
The result is a gallery filled with authentic expressions instead of tired faces counting down the minutes until it's over.
Quality isn't measured by how long you're standing in front of the camera.
It's measured by the moments we capture together.
